If you get a message from a Skype contact that looks like this:

DO NOT CLICK THE LINK. It’s ransomware that will lock your computer up, accusing you of possession of child pornography, and threaten to alert the authorities unless a $200 payment is made. And then pass the link along to all your Skype contacts.

SERIOUSLY, DON’T CLICK IT.

If you’ve already been infected, or if you know someone who has, instructions for removing the virus are under the cut.

The good news (yay good news!) is that you have great taste. Your ability to tell good stuff from crap is well-honed. That’s probably what got you excited about writing in the first place — you’ve found awesome stuff you enjoy reading and you want to create more of it. That’s excellent.

So… there’s some bad news coming. (Boo.) Sorry. But it’s universal news for everybody, so it’s not so bad.

The bad news is that you don’t automatically start out creating stuff that lives up to your taste. There will be a while, maybe a long time, before you’re reliably writing stuff that lives up to your standards. Like any other skill, it takes work. It takes practice. We all know this, but it helps to hear it. It’s going to take a while.

But that’s okay. More good news — all those pages we write and then toss? That is progress. That is experience, which is exactly what our skills need. We need those reps. You will never be awesome without first sucking, so go out and begin the process of sucking.

I hereby grant you PERMISSION TO SUCK.

The other big secret is that the first draft of everything is crap. Writing is revision. That’s more bad-but-also-good news; it is lame that it’s going to take a bunch of overhauls to get your prose shining and surprising and soulful and clear, but it’s also freeing. When you’re writing that first iteration, it’s guaranteed to be puketown — and therefore when you’re reading over it the next day or a month later or whatever, it is understood to be, as previously stated, puketown. Build that into your expectations, and I think you’ll find the process a little more fun. Then that fun can lead to finishing something, which is the best thing to grow your skills. Even finishing something pretty sucky is going to get you closer. Every writer is her own worst critic — even when you’re improving, all you see is flaws. That’s those high standards of yours: a blessing and a curse. But keep it up, and at some point, once you’ve waded through seas of crumpled-up pages, you’ll crank out something you’re kinda a little bit in love with.

Keep going. Keep writing. Keep battling.

I mean all my friends are at prom probably having fun and I’m just kind of sitting here talking to no one. No one’s even online to talk to really, other than people I just don’t like talking to or people I’m too awkward to talk to to begin with
